Personification

Personification

Everyone knows what a person is, but do you know what personification is?

A personification is when you assign human qualities to something that isn’t alive
Examples of Personification


  • 1 The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky
  • 2 The run down house appeared depressed
  • 3 The first rays of the morning tiptoed through the meadow.
  • 4 The bees played hide and seek with the flowers as they buzzed  from one another
  • 5 The river swallowed  the earth as the water continued to rise higher and higher
  • 6 The thunder grumbled like an old man
  • 7 At precisely 6:30 am my alarm clock sprang into life
  • 8 The news took me by surprise
  • 9 The evil tree was lurking in the shadows
  • 10 The ocean danced in the moonlight.

A hyperbole is a form of figurative languages
Like  similes and and metaphors.hyperbole
Are used of emphasising and humour speaking
And writing.
Examples of hyperbole

1.It was so cold i saw polar bears  wearing
Jacket.
2. i had a  ton of chores to do.
3.She is as thin as a toothpick (simile/hyperbole)  
4.He was skinny enough to jumped through a keyhole.
5. Her smile was a mile wide.
6. His brain is the size of a pear.
7. are walking as slow as a snail.
8. His stomach is a bottomless pit.

9.i was so hungry that i could've eaten an ox.

Features of explanation writing

Purpose: Explanation writing explains how or why something happens or how something works

Structure

  • A general statement to introduce the topic e.g in the autumn some birds
  • A series of logical steps explaining how or why something occurs e.g because hours of daylight shorten.( Body in paragraphs)
  • Steps continue until the final state is produced or the explanation is complete.
                                        
    Features

  • Present tense verbs e.g many birds fly south.

  • Connectives that signal time e.g then, next, several,months later.                               
  • Causal connectives, e.g because so, this causes.

Similes or metaphor

Similes compare one thing with another e.g “He was as cold as a ice

Metaphors on the other hand are hidden comparisons e.g instead of saying someone is as strong as an ox, We say he/she is an ox.

The great water giant has finished his bath. He pulls the huge plug out of the clouds. He roars his thunderous laugh and a wet slippery waterfall spills out of a squelchy sky. “Look out below” he seems to shout as the water

Explanation writing

Purpose: Explains or tells you why or how something happens or works

Features: Title tells you what the writing is about the first paragraph begins with a general opening statement e.g in autumn, some birds migrate

A series of logical steps explaining how or why something happens written in the present tense.

Use of time connectives e.g then, next, use of causal` connectives, Several months later
E.g because, so, this causes.

Diagram can be used together with explanation.
